How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a critical duty as your furnace prepares to heat your space.
Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails
When your pressure switch isn’t working the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking a couple times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off as a safety precaution.
Your furnace will show you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may notice short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
