Why home ventilation is important

We spend most of our lives inside—up to 90 percent in fact, according to an EPA study. And because these buildings are better sealed than they used to be, it also means contaminants can build up. The EPA says this can cause your home’s air quality to be two to five times worse than outdoor air. Struggling with poor indoor air quality can make you sick or aggravate chronic health concerns like allergies or asthma.

There are a few pollution sources that alter the air your family breathes.

1. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals are found in everyday household products, like furniture, flooring, paint and cleaning products. Prolonged concentration can cause respiratory inflammation and headaches.
2. Dust, mold and pet dander. These are the some of the largest, most common indoor pollution sources. They can worsen allergies and asthma, especially pets with long, dense fur.
3. Carbon monoxide. This colorless, odorless, tasteless gas is caused by the process of combustion in a natural gas appliance. CO poisoning can cause flu-like symptoms and can kill you.
