What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

A1 Chesney Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Calgary always writes about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds encouraging, what does it truly mean?

NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence and, as mentioned on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization is owned, operated, developed, and supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not everyone in the industry is required to be NATE-certified. The certification is discretionary and technicians can work in the heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration industry without being certified through NATE.

It’s important to A1 Chesney Service Experts that our team is NATE-certified to be sure we are sending the most qualified and trained technicians into your home. To make sure experts meet these benchmarks, the NATE-certification tests validate real-world working knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems for technicians. The exams are knowledge-based tests that assess the technician’s knowledge of these standards.

Since A1 Chesney Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification (not refrigeration), there are only certain areas pertinent to our technicians. NATE test candidates may obtain installation and/or service certification in one or more of the talent areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)

  • Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
