Happy Canada Day Published on June 30, 2016 The first of July marks Canada Day’s 149th anniversary! To commemorate the day we decided to find a few fun facts about this special day. Canada Day was originally known as Dominion Day because in 1867 Canada was titled the Dominion of Canada.The Dominion of Canada, present day Canada, was a combination of four colonies: Upper Canada (Ontario), Lower Canada (Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.Contrary to America’s break from Great Britain, the Canadian territories requested independence from Queen Victoria and she approved.The British North American Act was signed to declare the Dominion of Canada’s independence. That document operated as the country’s constitution until 1982.“O Canada” wasn’t the nation’s national anthem until July 1st 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880.
