How to Avoid Expensive AC Repairs

August 18, 2015

When you think about the ‘Dog Days of Summer’ in Calgary, chances are that you may find yourself fantasizing about a perfectly chilled home to arrive to when you get inside from doing yardwork. Of course for some homeowners, the sad reality is that they arrive home with a busted air conditioner and now must deal with an AC repair. So what can you do to get through those seemingly unending, sweltering days without maxing out your air conditioner?

  1. Reduce use of appliances that create heat. Of course you can’t completely stop using your oven and stove, but being mindful of their uses might help more than you would think. Avoid using heat-generating appliances during the warmest parts of the day as your air conditioner will more than likely already be working hard to keep your home cool.

  2. Keep your blinds and shades closed. Windows can let in an enormous amount of heat if your window coverings aren’t used, and considering the temperatures in Calgary, your home can warm up pretty quickly. If you’re heading to work or are just gone for a few hours, make sure to keep your blinds and shades closed to keep any extra heat out.

  3. Utilize fans. While fans don’t actually change air temperature, they do circulate air and help ensure your home is feeling comfortable. However, ensure you turn fans off in rooms that aren’t being occupied since they don’t reduce the air temperature.
