The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that offers financial support to men and women in the construction field who are living with life-altering injuries. Once a year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, raised in Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil suffered a massive stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the use of his left arm and the experience left his left leg greatly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors feared that he would ultimately end up permanently in a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their lone source of income, causing financial strain on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, an apparatus that uses functional electrical stimulation to help a person with foot drop walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they were not able to afford the equipment in addition to the intensive rehab that would be required so he could learn how to use it.
Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the incredible grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
