A1 Chesney Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Calgary George L. Chesney began his career as an apprentice in a hardware store in Seaforth, Ontario and after four years, become a partner with the same store. A few years later, Chesney moved to Calgary and married Edna Pickard, the daughter of a prominent merchant and in 1912, Chesney borrowed money from his father-in-law to launch his hardware and tin shop on Sixteenth Avenue and North Hill. Chesney had brought goods with him from Seaforth, including paints, screen doors, stoves, hammers, screws, bicycles, and buggy accessories and maintained his supply by purchasing new goods from local wholesalers, such as Ashdown’s. During the depression of 1913, Chesney borrowed money from the Standard Bank to buy an old Model T Ford truck so he could carry his hardware business into the surrounding countryside. Chesney survived the depression of 1913 and continued to provide excellent service and goods to his city and rural customers through his death in 1957, when his sons, Art and Doug, took over the family hardware business on the North Hill. Overtime the Chesney customer needs changed and so did Chesney.
