Common Calgary AC Problems and Solutions

June 13, 2016

Last year we published several of the most common air conditioning problems Calgary faces, but now we’re back with some frequent air conditioning issues that you can help troubleshoot.

Your air conditioner is on but not blowing cool air.

If your A/C system is running but not truly cooling, you might need to have your refrigerant levels examined. Refrigerant is important to make sure the air blowing from the AC is truly cool and keeps your family comfortable. Low refrigerant is frequently an indicator of a leak or that the system wasn’t charged properly.

One way to verify if you are low on refrigerant is to go to your A/C system and locate the two copper pipes. If the large one is “sweating” or covered in condensation, put your hand on the pipe and feel if it’s cold. If it feels cold, you are likely good to go and don’t require additional refrigerant.

If you’re not convinced or the pipe is not producing condensation and is not cold when you feel it, call A1 Chesney Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning and we’ll come out and examine your refrigerant levels and discover why your air conditioner is not blowing cool air. Remember, only an EPA Certified technician should work on refrigerant for central air conditioning systems, due to the risks of handling this potentially dangerous chemical.

You air condenser fan isn’t turning.

There are multiple reasons your condenser fan isn’t rotating. One might be that it simply burned out and you require a replacement. Humidity generally causes more condensation so another issue could be that the water is not draining correctly or that the drain is blocked. If you can confirm these things, you may be able to find the issue; but, if not, give A1 Chesney Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning a call and we can look into what is keeping your condenser fan from rotating and walk you through your options to get your AC problem corrected.

Your A/C is not providing ample air cooling.

It sounds crazy, but try lowering your thermostat. It seems silly but sometimes our busy lives cause us to ignore the obvious. If dropping the temperature doesn’t get your system working right, check and get a new air filter. If the air filter is obstructed, it could cause major cooling problems. Another problem that could result in your lack of cooling is an air conditioner that is not sized properly, and unfortunately this is a frequent issue when homes are constructed. A1 Chesney Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is happy to come out and perform an analysis to confirm whether or not the size of your AC is causing your troubles.

Air Conditioner shuts on and off over and over

If your A/C system is short cycling, or turning on or off consistently, it could mean one of many things. One thing is that your condenser or evaporator is obstructed or dirty and should be cleaned. Once the condenser and/or evaporator is cleaned and all obstructions moved away, you may be back to a regular running system. Note that humidity also plays a role so if your home cools to the desired temperatures, but then the humidity causes your home to heat up quickly, it could result in an on-again, off-again system because it’s having to work overtime to keep your home cool and comfortable.

No matter your problem, whatever common or uncommon air conditioning problem you run into, A1 Chesney Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is here for you around the clock. We are available all the time so we can get your AC system cooling and get your comfortable lickety-split.
